New Home, New Doors Open
An exciting opportunity has emerged for Inasmuch to open a six-bedroom transition house for refugee claimant men!
Our dream is to use this home to create a space of belonging for refugee claimant men who arrived to Canada alone. Inasmuch opened a women’s transition house for refugee claimants in May of 2024 and this home has become a vibrant community where former residents return to celebrate holidays together, visit, volunteer, and support one another. We are hoping to create this same type of community for men.
Refugee Claimants who had to leave immediate family members behind encounter an extra layer of trauma and loneliness. Unlike government assisted refugees who look to connect with others from their home countries after they arrive in Canada, for refugee claimants, doing so can be unsafe as those they meet in Canada from their home country may know people from back home they had to run from.
Another challenge unique to refugee claimants is that they face months of uncertainty while waiting for their hearings where it will be decided if they fit the definition of convention refugee and will be allowed to apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship.
We hope that this home will provide not only safety but that sense of community that these men will be longing for. We are so much better together.
For this new men's transition house opening November 12 we are currently in need of:
bath towels - 12
laundry detergent
toilet paper
paper towel
umbrellas - 6
coffee mugs - 12
If you can donate any of these items, please contact Michelle at admin@inasmuch.ca to arrange drop off.
Building Stability Together
With the opening of the men's transition house, we are closing our Ware Street transition house. This home was the first Inasmuch rental home and has been a special place of welcome for so many refugee claimants over the years. A few weeks ago, we held a farewell gathering where residents, past and present, stopped by to share memories, take photos by the door, and enjoy good food and good company. It was a great send-off, full of stories and gratitude for all that this house has meant.
Currently Inasmuch transition houses are all rentals. This fact puts Inasmuch in a vulnerable position. Inasmuch is looking for a viable long-term housing strategy that will provide transition housing and support for refugee claimants for many years to come!
Save the Date: February Fundraiser
Mark your calendars! We’ll be hosting an extra special fundraising event on February 27, 2026 to support purchase of a permanent home for Inasmuch transition housing and celebrate 10 years of being a registered charity.
More details will be coming soon. We can’t wait to celebrate this new beginning with you.
