Why Help Refugee Claimants?

An Inasmuch employee was recently asked: "Why do you do this job?" Their response? "I love it! I love my co-workers. I love the Refugee Claimants we serve. I love that moment when we hear from them that they passed their hearing and can apply for Permanent Residency! I love helping newcomers secure employment and find a suitable rental home. I love hearing that they passed their driver's test. I love seeing kids who were scared and silent now running free and laughing at their birthday party. Yes, the system and changing laws can be exhausting. The media narrative can be divisive. But the people we serve? They're why I'm here."

Refugee Claimants claim asylum in Canada. They have no contacts or financial support. Lonely, disoriented and afraid, many end up in homeless shelters in Vancouver. When we host them in Inasmuch transitional homes, we provide emotional, physical and social care that they desperately crave.
