Despite the growing number of people seeking safety in Canada, many misconceptions persist about who refugee claimants are, why they come, and what their presence means for our communities. These misunderstandings can create fear, division, and stigma. We believe accurate information is essential to building understanding and compassion.

Misconception #1: “Refugee claimants are breaking the law”
Under Canadian and international law, people have the right to ask for protection if they fear serious harm in their home country. Refugee claimants go through a formal legal process, including eligibility screening and review by the Immigration and Refugee Board. Not all claims are accepted. Seeking asylum is not illegal immigration, it is a lawful request for protection.
Misconception #2: “Refugee claimants take jobs away from Canadians” There is no evidence that refugees displace Canadian workers. Research consistently shows that newcomers, including refugees, often face higher unemployment than Canadian-born workers. Barriers such as language, credential recognition, and limited networks make it harder for them to find work. Rather than shrinking job opportunities, newcomers help expand the economy, which supports job creation overall. Over time, refugees contribute to the labour market by filling labour shortages and starting businesses.
Misconception #3: “Immigrants and refugees bring crime to Canada”
Immigration is not linked to higher crime rates. Canadian research has repeatedly found no causal relationship between immigration and increased crime. Immigrants, including refugees, are not over-represented in crime or incarceration statistics and, in some studies, higher immigrant populations are associated with lower rates of certain crimes, such as property crime. Many newcomers also face strong incentives to avoid any involvement with the justice system, as criminal charges can jeopardize their ability to remain in Canada.
Misconception #4: “Refugee claimants come to take advantage of the system”
Refugees come because they have no safe alternative. People do not leave their homes, families, and livelihoods lightly. Refugee claimants are often fleeing political persecution, or serious human rights violations. The journey to safety is frequently dangerous, expensive, and traumatic. Seeking refuge is about survival, not convenience.
Why This Matters
Misconceptions shape attitudes, policies, and everyday interactions. When misinformation goes unchallenged, it can lead to exclusion and fear. When we choose understanding instead, we create space for dignity, safety, and belonging.
At the heart of every refugee claim is a human story, a parent protecting their children, a young person seeking education without fear, a family hoping to rebuild their lives in peace.
